The Daily Raw - August 29, 2023 - Tuesday

8/29/23 - Tuesday

Nice and cool this morning - low 50’s! Even the cats think it is cool - they refuse to step out on the grass in the morning, opting to stay on the warmer patio concrete.

I completed a 45 full strength workout and it was a good challenge. My lower back is more or less fine - but it is stiff after prolonged periods of rest / lazing around, especially if I try to reach for the ground. I will head to yoga in a few minutes and hit the sauna afterwards.

Yoga was good and the sauna was operating normally so got my sweat on. Once I got home from the Y, I started to cook lunch - sautéd cubed eggplant, ground beef stuffed into roasted eggplant shells, topped with mozzarella cheese and broiled. Very tasty!

Another annoyance worked itself out today. I nabbed local Global entry interview appointment - the local airport announced last week they were hosting a pop up for Global entry appointments. I followed the application process but by the time my application had been processed and accepted, I couldn’t find any appointments available anywhere close. I had resigned myself to completing the process in October after I return from London.

Upon researching further, I came upon a recommendation to check the US Customs scheduling system on a daily basis. Upon checking this afternoon, the local airport showed up with available appointments which i promptly scheduled. It will be nice to have all of that taken care of before my overseas trip.

Today flew by - I took an afternoon walk right before some storms rolled through. I happened to be out walking the local prairie right before the rains came. I got home just in time.

Scott and I watched the next episode of Only Murders in the Building.

Stormy Day

And just two miles down the road, a huge, tornado spawning cloud.

There were several funnel clouds spotted, but only one touched down and damaged a house to the west of where we live. Fortunately, no one was injured.

The skies this week have been phenomenal - several beautiful sunrises and sunsets.

Monday morning - what a way to start the work week:

Snapped while I was filling up my car with gas. Yeah, I'm good at multi-tasking, although I'm probably not supposed to use my cell phone while filling up...

I've read the presence of contrails or vapor trails (condensation from airplane exhaust) means rain is on its way.

And so it rained all day Thursday.

The Flock of Birds

I admit, this capture looks much better on my little iPhone screen. It's a flock of birds taking off from the ground. With the harvest finishing up in the fields, huge flocks of crows move like water in the air. It's quite amazing to watch.

Camera Phone Friday - Summer Skies

Sitting at the baseball game on Wednesday and the clouds looked so puffy.
The team won Wednesday's game, but lost last night - the baseball season is officially over.

And where did our summer go? It must be hiding behind the clouds - at least it is here in the mid west.

Spring on the Prairie

After what seemed like endless rains, the rain clouds have departed, the winds have picked up and those cotton ball clouds of spring now dot the skies.

My favorite barns - I pass by them each weekday, as I drive to and from work.

It's Friday and we're headed out to see Caesar. The horses are loving the nice weather - it means they get to spend their days out in the pasture, eating the grass.

[Unfortunately for me, that means more horse poop to pick up. I am the designated poop scooper. Caesar must have pooped 5 times while we were in the arena today. Sorry if that's TMI - just trying to record our daily lives here....]

Cody still doesn't like having the camera pointed at him. He's always watching me. At least Ricky doesn't care.

Another sunny day, following yesterday's light dusting of snow.
But it was COLD, in the single digits! While I like the winter sun, I am looking forward to some warmer weather.

Today's picture processed completely in Lightroom 3 - just some of the basics - white balance, exposure, noise reduction tweaks. I am following Scott Kelby's Lightroom 3 book (excellent, BTW), so it's pretty slow going, but I have a feeling this will be a big time saver for me when I get more proficient. I just need to take the time to repeat, repeat, repeat.

Sunrise

During my Saturday morning run, I ran by the retention ponds in the 'hood and the temperatures were cold enough to cause a mist on the water. Beautiful! But I didn't have enough time to run back home and grab my camera - I had an 8:30 soccer game to get to. I thought I could go back Sunday morning.

But as soon as I stepped outside Sunday morning, I knew there would be no mist on the water - it wasn't cold enough. I walked out to the ponds and sure enough, just water. But instead, I watched the sun come up.

One of my favorite Norah Jones Songs:

But the clocks held 9:15 for hours

Couldn't tempt us if it tried
'Cause the afternoon's already come and gone

I guess seeing the sunrise was a nice alternative to mist on the water.

274/365 - Perfect Autumn Day

Crisp breezes, ample sun, puffy clouds.

OK, maybe it was a little more than "breezy". Here on the prairie, "breezy" equates to "windy", and that north wind can really put a chill into your bones. Brian and I weathered that wind on our neighborhood bike ride. OK, we only rode about one mile before heading back, but we enjoyed the time outside.

I captured the road on the way to picking Erica up from horse riding. I love the sky this time of year.

Our first real fall-like day, complete with bands of clouds that let the sun's rays pass through, beaming down on the prairie fields.

It's days like today that make me appreciate the flatness of this area, and the beauty from its simplicity.

The Mall Parking Lot

With the promise of an empty house all to myself this past weekend, what did I do? I went shopping at the mall, something I almost NEVER do unless coerced by one of my kids.

The newly opened Sephora store was my only stop, because it complete sucked me in. And I don't even wear makeup. Something about those sparkly displays, those beautiful colors, the flawless skin, pouty lips and eyes on those perfect models just draws me in. And yes, I dropped over 100 bucks there. And no, I didn't take any pictures, but I wanted to.

But I did witness the last glimmers of light in the sky as I left, and swung to an empty section of parking lot to capture it.

I steadied the camera on the side view mirror of the car, since there is no way I can hand hold anything slower than 1/60 sec

I then decided to set my aperture to f/22 and included the lamppost that was illuminating the parking lot, for some star bursts:

I sandwiched my lens in the crook of space between the side view mirror and the car. Sometimes you have to improvise at these things!

196/365 - Sun Through the Clouds

I spent most of today running the kids around in the hot, humid weather - to Hobby Lobby, then to the Bed Bath and Beyond, then to the Hancock Fabrics, and Target.
Erica is on a room redecorating kick, spurned on by my request for her to clean out her closets. Out came all the kids' books, her American Girl Dolls and several big boxes of stuff I forgot existed. I still don't know how it all fit in her room, either.

After all this shopping, Erica had to do more at the mall with one of her friends. It was after I picked her up that we caught this spectacular view of the sun through the clouds.

Maybe this spell of hot, humid weather is on it's way out....

124/365 - Morning Clouds

I specifically woke up early this morning to take pictures of the ponds in the neighborhood. The cool night and warm days results in the formation of mist on top of the water.
But the overnight temperatures didn't dip low enough, so no mist. Instead, I saw these black, rolling clouds. [I googled "types of clouds" and think they are Cumulonimbus Clouds]

The winds picked up and they proceeded to move across the sky as the sun was rising.

Even though I didn't capture the misty water, I think the clouds made up for it!

Today's SOOC capture is compliments of my 10 year old son. He spotted the clouds and suggested we take pictures. He wanted to take the picture, so I handed him the camera.
