The Onion Blooms [Macro]

When one says "onion", the first thought centers around the pungent, tear inducing layered bulb, not the greenery above ground and most certainly not the pretty flowers produced by the developing stalks. A search on the generic term "allium" yields photos of Giant, Decorative Allium, revered for its huge, magenta - purple blooms, commonly offered through glossy nursery catalogs. I found these white beauties in my friend's backyard - her husband grows a wide variety of produce, including the lowly onion. A closer look and you see the beauty in these perfectly spherical blooms.

I initially took several photos with my 24-70mm lens but quickly determined I would not be happy with the pseudo sharpness I was seeing due to the lens limitations and my poor hand held technique. So I dug out my macro lens.

I really should use this lens more.

Lace and Snow

What I captured while waiting several hours during yesterday's horse show: a lovely patch of Queen Anne's Lace.

I thought this single bloom looked like a snowflake on a stem:

Iris and Peonies Blooming In My Garden

First - a purple and white iris - this is new to my garden - a neighbor down the street was having new landscaping installed and offered up soon to be replaced bearded iris to anyone who wanted them. She even dug these up for me! They bloomed on Friday and I was amazed by the color.

These Peonies aren't from my garden - they are from next door. Thankfully, my neighbors know I like to take pictures of things and I don't think they mind if I'm huddled on their porch with my camera. It's the light on these beauties that caught my eye.

With all the rain we've received, the flowers are really showing off! I wonder what will bloom next.

Blossom White

Slowly, the spring blooms are starting to emerge. I might even classify that they are tentatively emerging, with continued cooler temperatures we are experiencing, but spring is starting to reveal herself.

I'm disclosing that I took this photo while standing in a parking lot, behind a row of cars. I wish I took it while enjoying a peaceful walk in the woods, but I take what I can get. It just illustrates that beauty is all around us.

Same tree, different processing - a bit of a sepia, monotone effect:

A couple days ago, I post photos of my neighbor's redbud tree. This one is the same species of tree, but it has white flowers, something I've never seen before.

Have you ever seen a white flowering redbud? I wonder if they are considered rare.

Indulgences | Tulips

Please pardon me as I indulge with more tulip photos. The wonderful winter sun shone bright all day long and I found myself at home earlier than normal. I moved the bouquet into the dining room where the afternoon light streams in.

Louie wandered in, curious as always.

I couldn't shoo him off - he was so interested in the flowers. No, he didn't try to eat them... just a sniff here and there.

For these next two shots, I placed the bouquet on the floor, with the white flowers in the sun. I spot metered the white of the blooms, resulting in the dark background. In the past, I've placed a black shirt on the floor when trying to get this sort of effect, but I've learned with brightly lit subjects, this isn't needed as long as I spot meter.

Pink and White

I think pink and white flowers epitomize spring. We are lucky to have such an amazing show this season.

I think I like the textured versions better. Flowers particularly are good candidates for adding texture, so if you have never tried to add a texture, it is a great place to start.

Not So Winter White

It's the end of February and we're all thinking "spring". It's unlikely that old man winter (who hasn't been around at all this year) will rear his head again, but you never know.

Sparkles

I finally got some free time to take pictures of random ornaments on random trees.

Because none of these ornaments are from our tree - I see pretty ornaments and just start snapping away....

Even if the tree is in the middle of a lobby and you can tell by the reflection in the ornament. Sometimes you just have to stop and take a picture.

I pass this beautiful dogwood every weekday, when I take the kids to school. Of course, I only started noticing it this week - with its spray of white blooms, under the canopy of bigger trees.

The blooms won't last much longer, so we enjoy them while we can.

I love the idea of chrysanthemums, but can never pull them off in my garden. I don't like treating them like annuals and plant them in the ground where they just wither and die.....

The View When Stopped in Traffic

Summertime, and the inevitable road construction.
What? No orange cones or road work signs? That's because they are off to the right, and I chose to look out to my left to take some pictures. Because I was completely stopped.

I might have to take the local highway instead of the Interstate Highway tomorrow. Then again, I might get caught behind a big combine then....

A Nice Fish For Dinner

I could see the ripples of fish surrounding this beautiful Egret in Lake Erie. He finally caught a bigger one, ate and shortly after, flew away.

I wish preparing dinner for me and my family was as easy. But then again, I can go to the supermarket if there isn't any food around.

Early Hydrangeas

I think they are early this year, but maybe they were late last year. I remember taking pictures of the first hydrangea blooms in July with my newly acquired D300. Here they are this year, a month early.
