Polar Vortex Activities

It's now Day 3 being house-bound due to blizzard / snow / icy roads and the Polar Vortex which has pushed arctic, sub-zero temperatures into our mid west region of the US. The temperature as I write this has risen above zero (it's 3 degF) and we are rejoicing!

With the sub zero temperatures, you are greeted by the simple crunching sound of snow underfoot when walking out to the mail box (yeah, a fruitless activity since mail service has been halted). The snow doesn't melt and there is no unsightly, dirty slush to step through or look look at. I have to say, the scenery is quite peaceful.

Follow the Leader

The sub zero temperatures have also spawned several new cold weather activities - because it's too cold to go outside and make a snowman.

The first one, Snow Ice Cream - gather a large container of clean snow. Mix together 1 cup of milk, 1/4-1/2 cup of sugar and 1/2 tsp of vanilla until the sugar dissolves. Mix in the snow, stirring constantly until the desired consistency.
(We didn't do this activity, but my friends did and it looked like fun).

The second sub-zero temperature activity - make your own snow! Boil a cup of water, transfer it to wide open container with a handle.
Go outside and throw the hot water into the air - away from you or anyone else. If it is windy outside, throw it with the wind. Voila! Watch the water turn to ice / snow / mist:
Boiling Water Experiment
OK, so my son wasn't too excited about the whole thing, but I thought it was pretty cool and I did it three times. Even my daughter thought it was cool.

You can find numerous videos on this activity. Seems as if everyone was doing it yesterday!

For the Love of Baseball

A couple of weeks ago, I rejoiced as I received my "third child" (aka my D600) back!

The Nikon Service guys replaced its shutter mechanism, updated the firmware, cleaned it up and even wrapped it quite nicely in plastic.
My #Nikon is Back from Nikon Service. Hoping no more sensor issues. #d600

I unwrapped it, put a lens on it, adjusted the focus back to single point (I had to break out the manual to figure that out, sheesh) and then it sat in my purse, unused.

Actually, since I keep it in my purse, I lugged it around with me everywhere. But I was slow on the picture taking. I blame it on the late summer heat and humidity - it was so hot and humid, all I wanted to do was hide in my air conditioned house (until the air conditioning unit fan shot craps, but that is another story). I had no desire to go outside and take photos.

Slowly, it made appearances at my son's baseball games. One or two shots here and there. Then I got into a groove and remembered how much I enjoyed capturing these moments in life. And I remembered how awesome this camera is at capturing action shots.

vs. Bloomington
Yup, he was out at second, but it was a good effort.

At Danville
Strike! And a poof of dust at the Catcher's Mitt!

The Coach gives some constructive direction after a tough inning.

At Danville

They are certainly having fun playing ball this year. Our team has a winning record and we're heading into the post season - wish us luck as we play in a semi final on Saturday! I'll be there to capture more action (and those in-the-dugout shenanigans).

Football in the Car

I was going to name the post "Monday Night Football", but thought better of it - the fans who use that search term would be pretty disappointed in this post - paper football and all.....

So, on the way home from last week's cross country meet, we passed the time by "kicking" a paper "football" in between the "goal post":

The football set up:
Set Up Number 3

Imagine my camera is the "goal"....

The Kick!!
The Punt Number X

It's Good!
Incoming Football

There was rejoicing in the stands (or is that the face of amazement?)
Is It Good?

Kids, don't try this at home, or in the car..... it could be addicting

190/365 - Jump In The Pool

The prerequisite for any hotel stay - the swimming pool! Better yet, a swimming pool they have all to themselves, the case here.

Jump!

I seriously snapped 200 photos of the kids jumping in the pool. This one was my favorite.

106/365, POTD - Action shots?

I took nearly 20 pictures today, trying to capture some "action" or "movement". Blurry movement is what I ended up with!

Chopsticks, anyone?

43/365: Spring Fever

With little wind and temperatures in the 60's, the kids played some ball outside. A nice change from the cold, snow and ice.

In addition to football, impromptu soccer and kickball games were enjoyed by all, including the cat!

27/365: Suprised and Stunned

Brian took a shot to the chest during today's indoor soccer game. I just happened to snap this picture right after he was hit. He shook it off and was OK, although after the game he said he wanted to throw up after being hit.

Difficult exposure - he was in the direct sun and the background was very dark, which I lightened up, but there's some noise. Oh yeah - I forgot to reset my ISO settings from last night, so that added to the noise. Oh well.

Some other random shots from today's game:

4/365 - New Year's Day Bike Rides

Part of today's adventure - Bike races on New Year's Day.
In 20 degree weather and whipping winds.
Sometimes I think the kids are crazy, but then I realize they are just full of life.

The biking riding allowed me to continue with this week's Project 365 Challenge of utilizing the Automatic modes on my camera - I chose to use the Action Scene Mode, which continuously adjusts the focus area based on the movement in the viewfinder. This mode also actuates the shutter quickly.

Picture of Brian taken on Action scene mode:

Exposure: 0.001 sec (1/1600)
Aperture: f/3.5
Focal Length: 48 mm

I wanted to use a bit of fill flash, so I switched over to Aperture Priority (what I shoot in 99% of the time, it seems). I find the Fill flash helps prevent shadows in bright, sunny lighting.
I combined the two pictures together here:

Exposure: 0.002 sec (1/500)
Aperture: f/6.3
Focal Length: 48 mm
