Lake Erie Sunrise

We had to wake up early this morning in order to hit the road again - another six hour drive in front of us. Leaving at 8am means waking up at 6:30. Not a big deal, really, but when you don't go to bed until close to midnight, that's not a lot of sleep.

Side Note - The kids don't care about lack of sleep when it comes to road trip time - they sleep in the car during the drive. But I feel it's my wifely duty to stay awake - to keep my hubby engaged in some sort of conversation (or mental telepathy). Because it really stinks when you are driving long distances and everyone else in the car is sound asleep. By staying awake, it's like I'm saying - I'm with you on this long trip, even though I don't have to maneuver through city traffic or road construction where the lanes become so skinny you can't fathom how you and the big truck in the next lane aren't rubbing side view mirrors.

But I digress....

OK, so I'm the first one up and I'm trying to get packed up in the darkness of the room. I take a peek out these ubiquitous room darkening shades (you know, the ones in every hotel room, with the big floral patterns) and see shades of light pink and gold illuminating the trees in the parking lot.

That means the sun is rising and I'm missing it. I say to myself - I need to finish packing up the bags and getting ready to load up the truck. It's just another sunrise, right?

Ten minutes later, I'm outside enjoying a wonderful morning along Lake Erie.

How many times can I capture the same life guard tower? Lots....

Even with the diversion, I still managed to pack the bags in time. So glad I went out to catch "just another sunrise".

There's something about those swing rides that spin you around in the air - like the one at Navy Pier in Chicago. Maybe these rides remind us of our childhood, swinging in the backyard, so high it feels like we're kicking the sky.

We're at Cedar Point and their newest ride is a variant of the carosel swing ride - swings that take you up 300 feet in the air. Literally kicking the sky.

Unfortunately, we didn't get to experience it - the ride was closed most of the day, plagued by what we call "new ride breakdowns". But the structure is so pretty along the shores of Lake Erie.
Distant Neon

I love how it looks at night, a star like beacon:

A little closer view today
Newest ride at #cedarpoint. Of course, it's not working.

At dusk the lights go on. So pretty.

One day, we'll get to ride it and hopefully, I'll be able to take pictures up in the air.

Day 185/365 - Thrill Rides

We are a family of thrill junkies. That's why we come here every year.

320 feet up the first hill.
320 feet up
I remember the first time I rode this one. I couldn't watch as we traveled up that first incline. I looked down into my lap. The ride up doesn't take long (thank goodness), because you are traveling up at something like 40mph!
Then the sensation of flying. Really.
The Millennium Force turns 10 years old this year. It's still a great ride.

Then this one. 410 feet high. 0-120mph in 4 seconds.
Future thrills
It will take your breath away. But the view from the top is beautiful, but too short. This year, Brian experienced the Top Thrill Dragster for the first time. I think he was shaky afterwards.

We also rode the Maverick twice and then the kids decided to go on a swinging rotating ride, MaxAir.
Kick The Sky
I think their feet are up there somewhere.
And I'll ride roller coaster after roller coaster, but I can't stomach the spinning, back and forth rides.

184/365 - Change of Scenery

Nothing like a nice change of scenery to refresh your mind and soul.

10.07.05 - Along the Beach

189/365 - Closing Time

It was officially July 5th when I took the picture of the Games Midway at Cedar Point. So I think it counts as today's Project 365 picture. Yeah, it wasn't exactly packed at that time, but you would be surprised how many people are there at 1am (see the stroller peaking out of the edge of the shark booth? I bet there was someone sleeping in it...).

188/365 - 16 Hours

That's how many hours we spent in the park today. 9am until 1am on Sunday morning. Some of the highlights:

Perfect weather - mid 70's all day long and overcast. It was a little cool during the water rides, but some shivering is part of the fun.
Roller coaster rides - The Millennium Force ridden at 10am and then at 10pm, with 4th of July Fireworks being set off the peninsula beach as the backdrop. Imagine soaring through the air at 90 mph, watching big bursts of fireworks in the sky.
Scott and the kids ride one of the original coasters, the 45 year old Blue Streak:

The new Starlight Experience, along the Frontier Trail. I love the look of lights wrapped around trees and the effect is immediately relaxing.

Yes, we were completely exhausted at the end of the day, but isn't that what fun is about?

187/365 - On the Road

We set out today on our annual trip to Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky, OH. This marks our third trip there as a family.

Scott is driving and Magnum, the bear, makes sure everyone stays in line. Scott won Magnum back in 1990 during our first trip to Cedar Point, a time we were working in Cleveland, just out of college. Magnum is named after the Magnum XL200 Coaster which celebrates 20 years this year [making us feel even older].

A six hour trip means I have lots of time to play with my camera. Until I realized I left the user manual at home. Oh well. I finished two books instead.

We arrive in time to enter the park during their Twilight hours (5pm-closing) and whet our thrill ride appetite with some of the less popular roller coaster rides. Brian isn't the thrill junkie that Erica is, but this year we got him on the Corkscrew and the Millennium Force. We think he is converted now.

We stayed until the park closed at 10pm. We'll be back in the morning bright and early at 9am.

Cedar Point Pictures

As promised, some pictures from our trip to Cedar Point:

Lake Erie serves as the backdrop to the giant wheel and the Wicked Twister Coaster.

Erica poses with Snoopy in front of their new Planet Snoopy attractions: (you are never too old to pose with Snoopy!)

One of the spires on the Wicked Twister - Erica and Scott are in the 2nd to the last car, and heading towards the top of the structure.

Another aerial view of the park (taken from the Giant Wheel) - the steep coaster in the far background is the initial drop of the Millennium Force Coaster - 310 feet high. The large structure up front is the Power Tower. (a free fall tower)

Erica and Scott ready to be launched on the Top Thrill Dragster: this crazy ride launches you from 0 to 120 mph in 4 seconds, directly up 410 feet, crest the top of the ride and back down the other side (and the track twists on the way up and down).
It is very entertaining to watch people as they are about to experience this ride - the anticipation and nervousness of first time riders and the excitement of experienced riders. Heck, Erica still looks apprehensive, and this will be her third time!

Anyways, the ride is a MUST DO - the view from up top is awesome!

Taking things a little slower - Brian drives an antique sports car.

Back to Reality

After 10 days of not having to cook, not having to make / pack the kids' lunches, not having to think about what time the kids' activities are, sleeping in, reading the paper at a leisurely pace, completing 3 books, and generally relaxing, we are back to reality.

I guess it had to end sooner or later....

Some of the highlights:
Erica and I have officially ridden all of "Major Coasters" at Cedar Point - 5 new rides for us this year, 15 out of the 17 coasters at the park (the remaining two are kiddie coasters - I'm too tall to ride them). I can't wait to ride some of them again.

4th of July Fireworks in Manlius - they put on a nice show.

Dinosaur BBQ in Syracuse - a great place for BBQ.

The kids trying out Grandma's new lawn tractor. As good as an amusement park ride!

Hopefully, I'll get the pictures downloaded off my camera soon..... but for now, I need to go to the grocery store!

Summer Vacation, Part 1 - Cedar Point

Vacation’s all I ever wanted
Vacation’s a time to get away
Vacation’s meant to be spent in love
Vacation by the Go-G0's

How appropriate for that song to come up on the iPod as we were driving from Illinois through Ohio en route to New York.

As 2007 has been already dubbed the year of the Roadtrip, we added another 1,900 miles on to the Tahoe during our week long vacation. This trip took us back East to visit Scott’s mother in Upstate NY. In the past, we have flown there and then onto Boston, but since we will see my side of the family in August, we decided to go to NY only and take the Interstate instead of the Airways.

By driving, we were able to take advantage of stopping along the journey. Our East bound stop was the Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky, Ohio. The park claims to be the Roller Coaster Capitol of the World, with 17 of the thrill rides. Scott and I last went to Cedar Point in 1990 when we lived in Cleveland - we had a great time back then and expected this return visit would not disappoint.

The plan – arrive Saturday afternoon, hit the water park, Soak City, that evening and spend all Sunday at the main park. The weather Saturday evening was warm and perfect for the water park. After 6pm, we had the water slides all to ourselves – no lines – just tons of fun.

The tracks of the Magnum 2000XL coaster weave through Soak city, giving us a taste of tomorrow’s adventures. It was almost too much for Erica to bear watching – she wanted to ride that coaster and knew she had to wait another 12 hours. But once she realized that the water slides were fun, she stopped obsessing about the roller coaster. We raced down the water slides, rode the family tube ride and frolicked in the wave pool until park closing time at 9pm.

Day 2 – Cedar Point

We were able to enter the park an hour before the general public (one advantage to staying at one of the Cedar Park Hotels). Mommy and Daddy first rode the Raptor coaster – an inverted suspension coaster. Erica had never ridden a looping coaster and did not want this one to be her first one, so she opted not to ride. But we would have to wait until 10am for many of the main rides to open.

That first family ride was the Magnum XL 2000 – [flash to the past] – this ride was Cedar Point’s fastest, tallest, newest coaster back in 1990, and the first ride Scott and I experienced. The coaster is over 200 feet tall and travels up to 72 mph. The ride was as exciting and fun as we remembered it. Back in 1990, we only were able to ride the Magnum two times due to the ride’s popularity. [Fast forward to 2007] – Erica rode the Magnum 6 times, 5 times with Mommy and 1 time with Daddy. Brian rode it twice. The longest we waited was 15 minutes.
We also rode the Gemini, the Mean Streak, the Miner Coaster and the Iron Dragon. Erica conquered her fear of inverted coasters and rode the Corkscrew coaster – and after the ride was over she commented – “is that it?”. I guess going upside down wasn’t so scary after all.

Daddy waves at the end of the Iron Dragon (Brian's Favorite)

Here is a picture of Scott, Erica and Brian in front of the Corkscrew –

Towards the end of the day, Erica and Daddy waited 45 minutes to ride the Millennium Force – at 310 tall and traveling at speeds up to 92 mph, this was Erica’s favorite coaster. Mommy and Brian will ride it the next time.

We did enjoy other more relaxing rides – the Sky Ride, the Swings, and the Antique Cars – and some thrill rides – the power tower and bumper cars. Mommy and Erica got drenched on Thunder Canyon and we had to buy Erica a new outfit (that was an expensive ride).

Our day ended at 10pm as we dragged our cold, sore bodies back to the hotel. That is always the goal - open up the park and close it down.
