Photos from yesterday's rain and fog.
Driving back from a campus event, the fog surrounding the Arboretum grounds caught my eye. I pulled into the empty parking lot and held a five minute photo shoot.
Welcome to February in the never-ending winter of 2014.
Perhaps the most popular of the hikes in Acadia National Park is the Ocean Path which runs along the east side of Mount Desert Island, from Sand Beach to Otter Point. The hike is an easy one, fairly level and over a smooth gravel path, with stunning views of the coast.
The adventurous can turn this easy hike into a more challenging one by heading off the path and onto the rocks!
You can bet Andrew was holding little Felix's hand oh so tightly! They ventured down to check out the white seam of rock / quartz shown by their feet. They didn't go any further than that!
The most common approach is from the north, starting at Sand Beach and walking south. We opted to start at Otter point (less crowded parking lot) and hiked north - the trail doesn't loop, so you walk out and back - this way you see all the different views of the coast. Even with the mist and occasional light rain (I thought I was in London again - after all, I was with my sister from the UK!), the hike was enjoyable and the scenery shrouded with mystery.

The main destination of this hike is the famous Thunder Hole, which draws its moniker from the sound of the waves crashing into the holed out rock formation. Yes, it sounds like thunder, and at high tide the water shoots out of the hole like a geyser.
We didn't time it quite right, but regardless, it was amazing to take in - to witness the power of the sea.
Thunder Hole is about the half way point along the two mile long trail. After reaching Thunder Hole, we turned back to Otter point, and the kids decided they would both take the easy way back and have Mummy and Daddy do the hard work.
If you are going to visit Acadia National Park the Ocean Path is is a Must Do activity - even in the fog and mist.
It's the evening before Thanksgiving and I have SO much to be thankful for - health, family, comfort, abundance, freedom, wealth and peace - just to name a few things that popped through my mind.
Sure, there are those minor annoyances in life (like the fact that it took us three tries before my daughter was able to get her driving permit - three trips to two different DMV's in less than five days), but we live such charmed, full lives.
I am charmed enough to be the proud owner of yet another new camera. Yes, I succumbed to the glowing reviews, the beautiful samples available on the web, got camera envy and just bought the newly released Nikon D600, my first full frame DSLR.
I did something different this time, though. I sold my old camera gear - my beloved D300 camera and three lenses - all gone. I still have my original D70 - I wasn't going to get much for it and it's always good to have a back up.
I've had the camera for two days, and finally got some time to work with it outside - in this morning's fog.
I haven't used a DSLR for over a month and I've missed it.
The camera performs beautifully.
I have no regrets buying it. Yeah, it's expensive, but I've come to the conclusion recently that some things are worth the cost (as long as they don't bring you into debt). So, in case you want to be enabled, there are several great deals available now with this and many other cameras - a $100 price drop, 2% rebates, free SD cards, batteries and camera bags. I bought mine through Amazon (another first for me - I normally purchase my camera gear through B&H) and had a great experience. [I don't have affiliate connections with any company - I'm just reporting on my personal buying experience.]

Although I don't enjoy driving in it, I love the mysterious look of the landscape when it's foggy outside.

There's something magical about fog in the morning, especially when the sun starts to burn it off.
I passed by the park on the way to work, and on a whim, turned around, parked the car and walked out into this:
It only took five minutes out of my day.
Five minutes well spent.

The weather was positively balmy yesterday. After almost a week of single digit temperatures, yesterday it was almost 40 DegF. The warm temperatures, coupled with the sun and snow resulted spotty fog along the prairie in the afternoon.
I posted this on my personal blog, but I like it so much that I thought it would nice to post here, too.
I try to run at least 6 miles each Saturday morning. This Saturday, I ran through the dense fog, marveling at the muted landscape that would only reveal itself as I ran through it.
I spotted the ravine the slough runs through - all misty and ethereal. I made a mental note to come back after my run with my camera.
Unfortunately, by the time I finished my 7 miles and drove back out, the fog had burned off in the ravine.
But I drove past the large lake and found the fog.

When the fog creeps into the neighborhood, I go searching along the scrub and brush found at the water's edge. I think I was lucky today.
A bit of my morning commute this morning. Fog seems standard when our daytime temperatures tip over 60 and the nighttime lows dip into the 30s. With Daylight Savings time in effect, I head down the highway as the sun starts to rise above the fields.
The sun burned off most of the fog quickly, but left a soft, misty film that allowed the morning sun to cast its golden hue along the highway.
What did you see driving around today? If you look for beauty, you will find it, even along the road.
I'm hoping the fog will lift soon and the sun will shine.

With the gray, foggy days, I decided to take pictures at night instead. I love how the mysterious aura the fog creates, especially at night.

I shot this Saturday morning and by chance, a flock of geese flew overhead while I was trying to compose the stream disappearing into the fog. So lucky me, I caught the geese flying into the Fog.

Not much going on here today - Scott worked out, the kids slept in and I "ran" 3 miles in the freezing fog this morning before deciding the street were just too slippery. I was literally "running on ice" (like the Billy Joel song goes) and not able to run very fast.
I extended my run by getting my camera to take some foggy pictures in the neighborhood.
This afternoon - pizza, basketball, more basketball, and football. More football tonight, as Scott's team, the Colts play. It could be a tense evening, but hopefully not.

One of the smaller farm / grain silos along the road to work. One of the buildings is the farmhouse, and I can guess the family has been farming for many generations. 
Love these foggy autumn mornings - especially when the sun starts to burn away the mist.
Because of the morning fog, I made sure I put the camera in the car. I love how the fog gives the landscape that fuzzy, ethereal look. I only managed to snap a shot of the road - it looks rather ominous, not ethereal, but I like it just the same.
